Did you know March is Listening Month?
I learned March is Listening Month in December, when I became a new member of the International Listening Association. The cool thing is the ILA invites people and organizations to promote listening in their own unique and creative ways in March. Sign Up for Listening Month
What’s your idea to promote listening in March?
Here’s mine: I’d love to recruit people to beta test the new Listening Cafe discussion model. You could use it at home, at school, in the community, or at work to discuss a topic, decision, or conflict. If you sign up at ListeningMonth.com, I will send you the free Listening Cafe Host Kit, and share some additional ideas and tips for hosting your own Listening Cafe on a topic of your choice.
In Harrisonburg, I’ll use it myself at a collaboration with WMRA and OrangeBand. WMRA is our local NPR station, and is currently doing an amazing multi-part series on Refugees in Virginia. The series is terrific and is worthy of discussion and reflection. The director of WMRA, Al Bartholet, and I brainstormed having a discussion about the series, for radio listeners to come together and listen to each other! So, on Saturday, March 5 at 3pm, at The Golden Pony, the radio station is holding a discussion about the series – and we’ll use the Listening Cafe to have it.
What topics and discussions would work well in small groups of 3-5 people, with a special emphasis on listening? Be creative, and try using the Listening Cafe.
The International Listening Association has championed March as International Listening Awareness month for many years. As a new member, I’m excited to take on their invitation to promote listening in March.
